Christopher Columbuss Spanish royal patrons, Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, (far right) witness the beginning of Columbus second voyage. Seventeen ships and 1, 200 men embarked to establish a colony to produce hides, gold, sugar and slaves for Spain. Among them were farmers, artisans, sugar cane plants and livestock. The ships sailed by Columbus did not have oars as depicted in the engraving
