Christopher (Kit) Carson, ca. 1861-65, in a photograph by Mathew Brady Studio. Carson was a Brevet Brigadier General in the Union Army during the US Civil War and was ordered to round up Navajos in New Mexico for internment. This was done by burning homes and crops, starving the Navajo into submission and their relocation in the Bosque Redondo reservation in the remote and arid Pecos River valley
