At the city arsenal, Illinois militia were mobilized
At the city arsenal, Illinois militia were mobilized to suppress the 1908 Springfield race riot. The violence resulted from lawful police protection of African American suspects from a lynch mob. From August 14-16, frustrated vigilantes killed citizens on the street, destroyed businesses, and homes in the Black neighborhood (BSLOC_2017_20_75)
