US Civil War. Battle of Antietam, also called Battle of Sharpsburg, Sept. 17, 1862. Dead Confederate artillery lay around their battery near the Dunker Church. It was built in 1852, by a small congregation of pacifist German Baptist Brethren farm families. The church was damaged in the battle, and finally blown down in 1921.
