Union soldiers advance through a Cornfield, crossing the corpse filled Bloody Lane, while receiving Confederate fire from two directions. In 20 minutes, this regiment suffered more than 50 percent causalities. James Hope, a soldier and professional artist, was 43 years old when he made sketches at the Battle of Antietam, from which he made oil paintings in the 1880s
