US Civil War, Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia, April 3, 1863. General Joseph Hooker, on horseback, waving his hat to troops headed into battle at Chancellorsville. Hooker, the third commander of the Army of the Potomac, was criticized for the Union defeat and high casualties. Lincoln relieved him of command in June 1863, in favor of Gen.
