US Civil War. Battle of Forts Jackson and St. Philip, April 1862. The deck of one of twenty of Admiral David Porters schooners carries a 17, 000 pound mortar. Six days prior to the Union Fleets passage by the forts on April 24, they were bombarded with two rounds every minute during daylight hours. On the first day, nearly 3, 000 shells were fired from distances between 2, 800 and 4, 500 yards. The forts were not reduced to rubble, but they were damaged and their garrisons were shocked.
