US Civil War, Battle of Hampton Roads, March 8, 1862, when the CSS Virginia attacked five Union ships. Her first kill was the USS Cumberland, which was rammed below the waterline and sank quickly with 121 seamen. Next she attacked the USS Congress, killing 120 sailors. Three other Union ships ran aground to escape shelling. In all, 400 Union men were killed, 2 ships lost, 3 disabled. March 8 was the US Navys worst day until the World War 2 attack on Pearl Harbor
