US Civil War. Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee
US Civil War. Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union Gen. Ulysses Grant in the McLeans House, at Appomattox, Virginia, April 9, 1865. It was the home of the family of Wilmer McLean, who moved his family to Appomattox Courthouse in 1863, after his farm had served as part of the battle field of the First Battle of Bull Run (First Battle of Manassas), in July 1861. It was said, with temporal inaccuracy, ~that the Civil War started in McLeans backyard in 1861 and ended in his parlor in 1865'. Photo by Timothy OSullivan
