US Civil War. CSS Robert E. Lee was a blockade runner for the Confederate States. She made 21 voyages in 10 months carrying over 7, 000 bales of cotton, returning with munitions for the Confederate army. On Nov. 9, 1863, the US Navy blockader, USS James Adger, intercepted and captured the ship, which was then assigned to the Union North Atlantic Blockading Squadron as USS Fort Donelson
