US Civil War. The Fall of Petersburg and Richmond, March 26-April 2. Union 9th Army Corps charge on Fort Mahone, at the Petersburg frontline, April 2, 1865. 14, 000 Federal soldiers battled 1, 500 Rebel defenders for 8 hours, to a stalemate. On the night of April 2nd to morning of April 3rd, Union attacks along Confederate line forced a general evacuation, ending the siege, as well as the Confederate defense of Richmond.
