US Civil War. Federal occupation of Atlanta, Georgia, Sept. 2 - Nov. 15, 1864, by the Union Army of Gen. William Sherman. Federal encampment on Decatur Street of shanties, likely made from wood stripped from Atlantas buildings. The Union army remained in Atlanta for nearly two and a half months, resting its soldiers, and accumulating supplies for the March to the Sea. The Trout House was a major Atlanta hotel.
