US Civil War. Fort fisher Expedition commenced on Dec. 8, 1864, and ended with the Battle of Fort Fisher on Jan. 15, 1865. Confederate defenders repulsed a Union assault of the forts sea face (on right). In the distance is the US fleet, the largest naval battle group of the Civil War. Another Union assault (not shown) on the northwest side of the fortress was successful. The battle finally ended at 10 PM, with a Confederate surrender (BSLOC_2018_9_109). For E
