US Civil War, Peninsula Campaign, April-August, 1862. Union battery No. 4 near Yorktown had ten 13 inch mortars each weighing 20, 000 pounds in fortifications at Yorktown. At the beginning of Peninsula Campaign, Union commander George McClellan spent a month preparing for a siege of the Confederate held fortress, only to have his opponent, Gen.
