US Civil War. Petersburg Campaign, June 9
US Civil War. Petersburg Campaign, June 9, 1864 to March 25, 1865. The Dictator siege mortar in front of Petersburg. The weapon fired a 220 pound, 13 inch diameter shell every half hour, with a range of 2.5 miles. It was mounted on a special railroad car, run on curved side tracks of US Military Railroad, which gave it mobility and adjustable aim. Photo by David Knox
