US Civil War, Petersburg Campaign, June 9, 1864 to March 25, 1865. Soldiers stand on a gabion parapet of Fort Sedgwick, also called Fort Hell, in April 1865, after Siege of Petersburg ended. Fort Sedgwick was on the northern edge of the battle front, near its Confederate opposite, Fort Mahone, also called Fort Damnation. It was built across the Jerusalem Plank road, the principle north-south route into Petersburg
