US Civil War. Siege of Charleston, 1863. Two Confederate soldiers, standing on the ruins of a chimney, in Fort Sumter, 1863. During the Union bombardment in August 1863, Confederate Gen. Beauregard replaced the forts usual garrison with 320 infantrymen, who withstood the shelling and repulsed a Union landing party on the night of Sept. 8, 1863. The attack by 400 Union sailors and marines failed, of whom 8 were killed, 19 wounded and 105 taken prisoner, against no Rebel casualties. Photo by George S. Cook
