US Civil War. Siege of Charleston, 1863-65. CSS H.L. Hunley, was a small, hand-powered submarine, built in 1863 in Mobile, Alabama. On February 17, 1864, while on blockade duty off Charleston, she approached the steam sloop of war, USS Housatonic, and detonated a torpedo against her side. The Federal ship sank rapidly, becoming the first warship to be lost to a submarine attack. Hunley did not return from her mission. In May 1995 her wreck was located, and eventually raised in Aug. 2000. Drawing by Conrad Wise Chapman
