US Civil War. USS Red Rover, was a US Navy hospital ship, serving the Mississippi Squadron. Her medical staff included nurses from the Catholic order, Sisters of the Holy Cross, who were the first female nurses to serve on board a US Navy ship. The ship treated sick and wounded engaged in the Vicksburg Campaign in 1862-63
