US Civil War, Vicksburg Campaign, Jan. 8-July 4, 1863. Battle of Jackson, Mississippi on May 14-15, 1863. Gen. Grant moved on the state capital, Jackson, to dislodge Confederate reinforcements for Vicksburg led by General Joseph Johnson. Union forces took the city May 15, and Johnstons forces retreated North, outside the Vicksburg siege perimeter. Image shows the charge of the 17th Iowa, 80th Ohio and 10th Missouri
