US Civil War, Vicksburg Campaign, Jan. 8-July 4, 1863. Blast of 2, 200 lbs. of gunpowder under Confederate Fort Hill, along the Vicksburg Siege perimeter, June 25, 1863. As the dust settled, Union soldiers entered the blast site, only to receive Confederate musket and cannon fire. After several hours of hand to hand fighting, Union soldiers fell back to their trenches, after suffering 200 casualties, to only 68 for the Confederates
