Bill Clinton signing a bill which included a line-item veto on Aug. 11, 1997. Congress had empowered this action with the Line Item Veto Act of 1996'. Clinton's exercise of the law was immediately challenged and ultimately declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in Clinton v. City of New York, June 25, 1998 (BSLOC_2021_7_13)
