Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, was the first Union officer to be killed in action during the US Civil War. He was shot by the secessionist proprietor of the Marshall House Inn, after removing the Confederate Stars and Bars flag flying from its roof. He recruited and led the Fire Zouaves of the 11th New York Infantry Regiment
