Colossal statue of George Washington, by Horatio Greenough, 1841. This work was commissioned for the centennial of U.S Washingtons 1732 birth and was to be placed in the Capitol Rotunda. Greenough based the work on a description of the ancient statue of Olympian Zeus. The sculpture portrays Washington, draped in a toga with his chest exposed. The partial nudity and the classical allusions resulted in public disapproval, causing the statue to placed outside, on the Capitol grounds
