Commemoration of the Death of General Washington in Philadelphia, Dec. 26, 1799. Washington died at Mount Vernon, on Dec 14, 1799, and was buried there on Dec. 18, 1799. In Philadelphia, then the National Capital, a formal government commemoration was held, which included this elaborate funeral procession with an empty coffin, from the Capitol to the German Lutheran Church
