Commodore John Rodgers, in an undated copy of Gilbert Stuarts portrait. He served in the US Navy in the Quasi War with France, Barbary Wars, and the War of 1812. In 1815 he was appointed to the Board of Naval Commissioners, serving until he retired in 1837. Commodore Rodgers was the first of a famous US Navy family. His son John Rodgers served in the US Civil War, and his great-grandson John Rodgers served in World War I
