Commodore Thomas Macdonough, by Gilbert Stuart, 1815-1818. Late in the War of 1812, he fought the British in the Battle of Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain, Sept. 11, 1814. His ships were victorious, which won the US claim for Northern New York and Vermont at the Ghent peace conference
