They started the Boxer Rebellion against Chinese Christians, European missionaries, and foreign nationals in northwest China. Many came from the country, originally armed only with sticks, their ritual gymnastics, and superstitions. The 1963 movie, 55 DAYS AT PEKING, was based on the war (BSLOC_2017_20_24)
