CONCOURSE OF THE BIRDS, by Habiballah of Sava, 17th c. Iranian painting, opaque watercolor on paper. Illustration of a mystical poem, Mantiq al-tair (Language of the Birds), written by a 12th century Iranian, Farid al-Din Attar. The birds symbolize souls in search of spiritual unity. They will make their pilgrimage under the leadership of a hoopoe, the bird perched on a rock at center right. Note the hunter with a gun, a weapon introduced into Iran around 1550 (BSLOC_2017_16_30)
