Confederate General Nathan Evans, commanded
Confederate General Nathan Evans, commanded a small brigade at the First Battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861. His 900 soldiers slowed the Union advance on the Confederate flank, from Matthews Hill. This allowed the Confederates to regroup on nearby Henry Hill. When fresh reinforcements soon arrive, the Union troops were forced into a disorganized retreat
