Confederate massacre of African American Union troops after the surrender at Fort Pillow, April 12, 1864. General Nathan Bedford Forrest was the Confederate commander, but claimed no involvement and argued it was the spontaneous action of southerners enraged at seeing former slaves fighting them with guns.
