Congressman Elihu Washburne was close to Abraham Lincoln, and supported Grants re-entry into the army at the beginning of the US Civil War. Washburne represented Illinoiss 1st district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1853 to 1863, and then the 3rd district from 1863 to 1869
