Cowboys playing mumbly peg during a break at the Turkey Track Ranch in Texas in 1906. Each player to flips or tosses his pocket knife in a progression of throws so that the knife sticks in the ground and stands erect. The term Mumblety-peg came from the practice of putting a peg of about 2 or 3 inches into the ground, which the loser of the game had to pull out with his teeth. Photo by Edwin E. Smith
