The Cumberland Road, was the first part of what was to become The National Road. It began in Cumberland, Maryland, and ultimately extended west to Vandalia, Illinois. It was the first an internal improvement, funded by the federal government. The first stretch between Cumberland, Maryland, was built over the mountains to what is now, Wheeling, West Virginia. Opening in 1818, it was an example of public works embraced by Whig politicians, and rejected by the Jacksonian Democrats. Among those whose frustrated in their attempt the start other such projects, were President John Quincy Adams and Senator Henry Clay
