Daddy Rice wearing the costume of his character Jim Crow, dancing with a little skip in his step. Thomas D. Rice, was an American performer and playwright who performed in blackface using African American vernacular speech, song, and dance. He introduced the Jim Crow character in the 1830s. It is not clear how, but the name Jim Crow became a shorthand for the laws, customs, and etiquette that segregated and demeaned African Americans from the 1870s to the 1960s
