Death of Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, the first Union officer to be killed in action during the US Civil War. His compatriot from the New York Fire Zouaves, Frank Brownell, immediately stabbed and killed the southern sympathizing proprietor. Ellsworth is holding the Confederate Stars and Bars that had been flying over Marshall House Inn, Alexandria, VA. May 24, 1863
