The destruction of the town with all of its Pequot Indian inhabitants occurred during the Pequot War of May 1637. New English colonists were led to the palisaded indigenous village on the Mystic River by their Narragansett and Mohegan allies in May 1637. Within were about 70 wigwams and 400 women, children, and elders. After surrounding the village, the colonists set it on fire at dawn, killing most of its sleeping inhabitants in the blaze, or as they attempted to escape. The Narragansett and Mohegan left the alliance because they disapproved of the tremendous loss of life, and were disappointed they could not take Pequot women and children to adopt into their tribes
