This early view of the west facade of United States Capitol, was painted by Victor de Grailly (French, 1804-1889), after William Henry Bartlett (British, 1809-1854), ca. 1826. From 1832 on there were several paving methods applied to reduce the streets mud and dust. It got its first asphalt surface during the Grant administration, 1869-77
