THE EDGE OF THE WOODS AT MONTS-GIRARD, by Theodore Rousseau, 1852-54, French painting, oil on wood. At Monts-Girard in the Fontainebleau forest some trees were hundred of years old. Rousseau painted them with loose brushwork, and softness of form within an informal composition. This painting was well received by the Paris Salon of 1855. Rousseau was a leader of the Barbizon School of Romantic realist painters (BSLOC_2017_9_103)
