Edwin Stanton was Lincolns Secretary of War during the US Civil War and continued as a member of President Andrew Johnson. During campaigning for the 1866 midterm elections, President announced he planned to fire Cabinet secretaries who did not agree with him. Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton was his first target. On March 2, Congress passed the Tenure of Office Act over the Presidents veto, requiring Senate approval for the firing of Cabinet members
