Elbridge Gerry, was an American politician of the Jeffersonian Republican party and 5th Vice President of the US, serving in the second James Madison administration. As Massachusetts Governor, he signed legislation enabling the first gerrymander, the manipulation voting district boundaries to favor his Republican political party in 1812
