Eli Whitneys Patent for the Cotton gin, March

Eli Whitneys Patent for the Cotton gin, March 14, 1794. Whitney did not intend to sell the gins. Rather, he anticipated charging farmers for ginning their cotton, asking two-fifths of the value, to be paid in cotton. Resentment at this greedy scheme, coupled with the mechanical simplicity of the device, resulted in the gins unauthorized manufacture and sale. Whitney received some relief when the South Carolina legislature voted $50, 000 for the rights for that state, and North Carolina levied a license tax for five years, from which about $30, 000 was realized for Whitney
