English privateer, Francis Drake, in an engraved portrait attributed to Jodocus Hondius, ca. 1583. In the 1580s and 1590s, he raided Spanish shipping and seaports in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans of the New World. In the Old World, Drake was vice admiral in command of the English fleet when it defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588
