An enormous pile of buffalo skulls at the C. D. Glueworks, Rougeville, Michigan in 1892. Bison hunters stripped the skins and left the carcasses and bones behind on the plains. A market grew for the abandoned bison skeletons when the bones were found to make excellent fertilizer. Based on an average price of $8 per ton, this trade brought 2.5 million dollars into Kansas between 1868 and 1881
