Eugene Talmadge, celebrating his victory in the democratic primary in Georgia. July 17, 1946. He promised to keep Blacks in their place in Jim Crow Georgia and was elected Governor in the Fall elections. But he died of natural causes on died on Dec. 21, 1946 before he started his 4th term as Georgia governor. By court ruling, the Lt. Gov. elect, Melvin E. Thompson was named governor.
