THE FALL OF NEW AMSTERDAM, by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris, ca. 1930. Dutch Director General, Peter Stuyvesant, on August 27, 1664, at the battery where cannons are made ready to fire on three British Warships demanding the citys surrender. Residents of New Amsterdam plead with him to hold fire on the British, who have arrived to claim the territory for England. In reality, Stuyvesant received a petition signed by 93 leading merchants, including his own son, to save the city by surrendering without a fight
