Father Charles Coughlin, radio priest at the White
Father Charles Coughlin, radio priest at the White House, after meeting with FDR on Jan. 8, 1936. By this time, Coughlin was moving toward a populist monetary policy, abolition of the Federal Reserve and requisition of wealth in wartime. In 1938, he defended Nazi violence, argued that Kristallnacht was justified as retaliation for Jewish persecution of Christians. As he moved toward the radical fringes, he lost his mass support.
