On Feb. 21, 1868, Adjutant General Lorenzo Thomas (far left) formally demanded possession of the War Department from Secretary Edwin Stanton (3rd from right). Thomas disliked the abrasive Stanton, and boasted of his intention to oust him from office by force. Thomas was refused and arrested for interfering with the duties of the War Office. Thomas became a key witness for Johnson in his impeachment trial
