Ferdinand Magellan, led the first expedition
Ferdinand Magellan, led the first expedition that circumnavigated the Earth. The Portuguese explorer led the Spanish expedition to the East Indies from 1519 to 1522, that sailed west from Spain, through the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, returning to the Atlantic and Spain. Magellan did not complete the voyage. Juan Sebastian Elcano led it through the East Indies after Magellan was killed in the Philippines in 1521
