Fernando Wood was Mayor of New York City from 1860-1862 and served in Congress from 1863 to 1865. He was a Copperhead, who expressed sympathy and supported policies beneficial to the Confederacy. As mayor he suggested NYC secede from the US in order to continue its cotton trade with the South. Steven Spielbergs 2012 film, LINCOLN, portrays Wood, played by Lee Pace, as a leading opponent of President Lincoln and the Thirteenth Amendment
